Sbooster Best of Two Worlds Power & Precision ECO (BOTW) Power Supplies

Sbooster Best of Two Worlds Power & Precision ECO (BOTW) Power Supplies cost £300 each and are replacements for the all too common wall-warts that seem to be de rigeur with many audio products. Dan Worth feels the power.

Sbooster are not new in understanding how important  power supplies are in any good audio setup. The “Best Of Two Worlds Power and Precision ECO Power Supply” is more than a mouthful to utter and yes it is one product, so I will be referring to the unit as BOTW. The BOTW supply is the successor to the companies previous supply which was based around a high quality switching supply that was smoothed incredibly well giving a notable improvement overall ripple to standard switching supplies – I’ve used a couple over the years, still favouring good linear supplies.

Sbooster themselves champion their new BOTW supplies as a fine balance between power, precision and efficiency. At the supply’s inlet their is a dual-stage line filter and earth choke, which eliminates any high frequency pollutants from entering the audio-grade transformer, which is precision wound and heavily shielded.

Urbanista Seattle Wireless

Lekre og vellydende. Under det kule ytret gjemmer det seg et par raffinerte hodetelefoner med overraskende lyd. Uvanlig sobert utseende for street-hodetelefoner. Behagelige og foldbare. Utmerket lyd.

Yamaha R-N301

Known as one of the few manufacturers who constantly make high quality stereo receivers, Yamaha now offers new models, that not only feature great functionality but also added network capabilities.

Yamaha R-N301 remote control

Distinctive Look & Design

In terms of design, the new Yamaha models (ending with a 1) have had some minor changes compared to the previous generation. The clean lines and the rectangular shape of the front panel is still there, but to adjust the sound characteristics (EQ) and to select the active inputs they´ve now gone for rectangular buttons instead of rectangular rotary knobs. This may lessen the somewhat retro look and feel, but the receiver still manages to kept the distinctive style of being a Yamaha.

These buttons are placed in the center of the front panel, and above them is a dot-matrix display with eight small, round buttons. On the left side of the front panel you´ll find the standby, speaker selection (A / B / A + B) and a 6.35-mm headphone output, while the right side is reserved for the two controls wheels/knobs – one for adjusting the volume and one for navigating through the menus.

Yamaha R-N301 front

In comparison to more expensive receivers, the rear panel of the Yamaha R-N301 is a bit on the modest side, but still contains all that is necessary. To connect analog sources the 301 has four inputs and one output, and digital sources are connected to either the coaxial and/or optical input (one of each). Connecting to a local area network is done by using a standard Ethernet port (RJ45), and a total of eight terminals are provided for speakers that can be used to connect either two pairs of speakers or one pair in a bi-wire configuration. Finally, there are inputs for FM and AM antenna, USB-A port and a non-detachable power cable.

Given that this is one of the basic Yamaha stereo receiver models, the housing is characterized by a slightly smaller depth, while the top and sides are made from a single piece of sheet metal with a large number of slots for cooling and ventilation. Behind the front panel is a printed circuit board for the control keys, and behind them is some empty space, which is useful for cooling the receiver. A closer look reveals that Yamaha have chosen to use high quality components from Texas Instruments, Zentel Electronics, Jamicon and STMicroelectronics, all highly reputed in the audio industry.

The R-N301 is in keeping with what we´re already accustomed with when it comes to Yamaha in general. In addition to the multilingual instructions manual they include indoor FM and AM antennas, as well as a full size remote control that can be used to control other devices from Yamaha.

High Resolution Is The Standard

Although the R-N301 lets you connect up to four analog and two digital sources, an important piece of functionality in the receiver is the option to connect to a DLNA certified local network. This way it is possible to play music and audio files using network storage (NAS) and any other locations where you have music in digital format. If streaming is performed with a PC, it is necessary to install a software server, like Serviio for example. In line with modern trends, R-N301 supports streaming 192/24 FLAC and WAV files over the network, which is a great achievement for a device at this price range.

Another plus is Yamaha’s free Network Player Controller app, which allows you to control the receiver with your smartphone or tablet. Already in its fourth version, this application has reached full maturity and has virtually no weak points, at least nothing worth complaining about. All the controls are carried out smoothly, and is intuitive and logical. The application options are really great – from the selection of the source and content, to controlling the volume and creating playlists.

During music playback the R-N301 does not create a very big sound stage, but the definition of colors and tones is very good. In terms of color and warmth, Yamaha’s new generation is miles ahead of the often cold and too sharp tones that characterized the older models, and the unit we tested had a very pleasant and balanced sound.

Acoustic guitar and the voice of José González in the song ‘Heartbeats‘ sounded realistic and intimate, and the music was radiating emotions. Moving on to more energetic music showed that the Yamaha was up to the challenge with powerful bass, fierce rhythm and awesome electric guitars riffs. High frequencies are spacious and there´s an excellent relationship between the clear and defined presentation and the subtle details that underlie the musical work. No matter what type of music, the midrange preserves the richness of the tones, although with a slight prominence in the presentation. It achieved a fairly good separation of instruments in complex compositions and vocals sound natural and convincing. The lowest frequencies do not go particularly deep and lack the subsonic kick that can be heard and felt with more expensive devices, but we have not yet heard an amplifier or receiver in this class that can do so. On the other hand, R-N301 have an excellent control and definition in the bass, and it seems to us that in this respect it´s even better than the more expensive R-N500.

In addition to using analog and digital sources and streaming over the network, R-N301 allows you to listen to FM and AM radio stations, as well as internet radio using the vTuner service and music streaming services like Spotify and Pandora. It has less functionality compared to the R-N500, reflected in the absence of a preamplifier for a turntable and USB-A port for playback directly from a portable hard drive and USB memory, and users of Apple devices will be able to use the AirPlay wireless connection. If you want to use a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection, R-N301 allows you to add external adapters, the YWA-10 (Wi-Fi) and YBA-11 (Bluetooth).

Yamaha has offered an even more affordable model with the R-S201, but this unit will only satisfy users that are happy with analog inputs and radio tuner. Therefore, we believe that R-N301 delivers comprehensive functionality and features – everything a modern stereo receiver should have. In addition, the sound quality is a pleasant surprise and is only slightly below the more expensive models,  making the Yamaha R-N301 a compelling choice for anyone looking for a stereo receiver with high functionality and very good sound.

Paradigm MilleniaSub

Talk About Sub Yoga! More Positions than a Swami Teaching Yoga in an Ashram

MilleniaSub … It will turn you on, bliss you out, and rock your soul to the core! Think of it as the mind/body/bass connection!

We’re glad you’re thinkin’ about a Paradigm sub! And congrats! It’s obvious you have great taste since you’ve chosen the world’s #1 Speaker Brand! We’re not blowing smoke, we’ve been voted #1 twenty times*.

If you haven’t heard The Paradigm Difference you’re long overdue! The difference this sub will make to your music and home theater experience can’t be put into words, but you’ll hear it and you’ll feel it. They say Paradigms put you in the moment and keep you there! The amorphous ‘they’ are right. It’s a humbling experience, one that takes you beyond the sub’s slim and toned beach bass body to a place where you’re absolutely lost in the music or movie you’re watching.

Reference Bass

Your MilleniaSub is part of Paradigm’s ‘Reference’ collection … cool style and superb quality that includes ‘cost no object’ technology at below what you’d pay for any other genuine high-end subwoofer with this much cool stuff.  We guarantee you won’t be able to keep the Paradigm difference a secret. In fact, we hope you don’t. Spread the word! Talk about it. BRAG about it! Play your MilleniaSub and let others listen! Our mission is to rid the world of bad sound … and by ‘bad’ we mean the kind of subwoofers the big box stores stock, the ones that pretend to be dangerous and big-bass mean, but in the end couldn’t give a fish in a fish bowl a fair shake.

So what are you waiting for? Get down to your local A/V specialty dealer and ask for a listen … we guarantee a whole new mindset after you’ve heard the MilleniaSub. There’ll be no going back. Like we said, it’s a mind/body/bass connection!

Back-to-Back Bipolar Dual-Woofer Design … inherently vibration cancelling. Woofers fire in opposite directions resulting in a physical cancellation of vibrations and a massive reduction in the potential for sound-destroying resonances. Bloated, boomy bass?? Not a chance!!

Killer Polymer Monocoque Cone Design … the outer skin of the woofer cone bears the brunt of the motion stress brought on by extended cone excursion. Cone is FEA-optimized for maximum strength-to-weight ratio.

Over-molded Corrugated Santoprene® Surround … well known performance advantages like high excursion and symmetrical compliance as well as increased longevity and you-can-bank-on-it-performance reliability. Design geometry reminiscent of our RVC-12SQ in-wall sub = higher output, lower distortion, every bass note sounds distinct.

Radical Dustcap Design … braced through the center and adhered to the cone’s edge allowed us to move primary cone breakup mode to outside the woofer’s operating band. Reduced distortion (inaudible actually!) and improved frequency response. Not to mention it looks totally cool!

FEA-Optimized Motor Structure … 1˝ voice-coil, high-energy rare-earth neo magnets – swami-approved for their radiating energy!

5-mm Thick Extruded Aluminum Cabinet … ultra-rigid but also super slim, allowing us space to tuck in all of this crazy state-of-the-art technology!

Advanced Ultra-Class-D™ Amplifier … Paradigm’s Digital Signal Processing Design. Sophisticated mathematical algorithms ‘shape’ frequency response ensuring accurate, consistent, musical bass without distortion even at the highest output levels.

Paradigm MilleniaOne Speaker System
The MilleniaSub is equally impressive, and equally well built, though otherwise its strongest skill set is in ergonomics. It takes up little space and will go almost anywhere you tell it to, a function of both the flat form factor and the fine-tuning possible with the Perfect Bass Kit.—Mark Fleischmann, Sound & Vision Read the full review »

Paradigm Reference MilleniaOne 5.0 Speakers and MilleniaSub Subwoofer Review

The MilleniaOne 5.0 speakers combine gorgeous styling with outstanding performance in the compact speaker class. ..The MilleniaSub is also a great looker and thanks to its design and size, it is one of very few subwoofers on the market to offer such flexibility of placement. Better yet this subwoofer will surprise most listeners with its extraordinary performance.

Paradigm MilleniaOne/Sub review
The sound was rich and detailed, with that synergy you get when all the surrounding channels are served by an identical enclosure…Easy with music and hard-hitting on explosions from the sub, this is a real option for space-strapped fans of cinema sound.—Adam Rayner, Home Cinema Choice Read the full review »

The MilleniaOne and MilleniaSub pairing smash any preconceived notion of what a “lifestyle system” is meant to be. Paradigm hasn’t just taken some cheap parts and coated them in a shiny shell here. Instead, the company has taken the high road and delivered a well-built, highly musical sound system that just so happens to look fantastic as well.

Tellurium Q Black was their first cable and they knew they were on to something special when they took the prototypes to various dealers for their comments and input. One in particular would not believe that it could match the somewhat thicker more expensive cable in their demonstration system.

Tellurium Q sat down and listened to some of the dealers familiar music tracks, then they swapped the cable for Tellurium Q Black. The dealer sat forward, looked at TQ and quite seriously asked what else they had done to the system while they were changing the cables over. It was only when the dealer swapped the cables himself a couple of times he believed the evidence of his ears.

So why Black II? Despite Black winning multiple awards, surprising owners with it’s performance and more people than ever choosing to use it in their systems?

Tellurium Q have been learning and developing, especially in the last few years and have come up with a way to make this little gem even better. The only thing to do was to give it to their customers. Switch Black for Black II and it is completely obvious which is which. Once you hear the difference, it is also completely obvious why they felt compelled to upgrade Black in the way that they have.

HIFI World: Back in black

Tellurium Q has updated its award-winning Black cable – and made it even better, says Jon Myles

Tellurium Q may be a relatively young company but it has forged an impressive reputation for constructing high-quality audio cables during its eight years of operation. One main area of its focus has been engineering as clean and phase neutral a path for electronic signals passing through loudspeaker cables and interconnects as possible. If implemented correctly, this should give a more transparent, focussed sound with less smear and the reduction in perceived timing of musical pieces it brings.

While the original Black cable was good this new version takes all its qualities and builds on them with a sense that it is letting even more of the musical information through. Timing, especially, seemed better and more focussed with a total absence of smear or haze around instruments. With a slice of classic electronica such as Kraftwerk’s ‘The Model’ the flip-flopping bass line had a rock-solid beat to it but wasn’t overly dominant, allowing the intersecting synth lines above to shine through.

An update to an already outstanding loudspeaker cable, the new Black II cables improve on the originals to a remarkable degree. Highly recommended.

Looking to upgrade your speaker cables? Paul Rigby reviews Tellurium Q’s upgraded Black cables called…wait for it…the Black II

If you are enhancing and improving your hifi then, it goes without saying, the inherent quality of the music spewing from it, should be better than before. That’s a ‘given’.

The lowering of inherent and sonically damaging noise creates a generally improved suite of sonic frequencies that will serve any audiophile looking to upgrade from budget cables very well indeed. As you can see, even those of you who own the original Black cables should take a serious look at the new Black II cables. >>>>>>>>

External Power Supply Options

Mytek Brooklyn DAC is equippped with external 12VDC power supply input. There is some sound quality improvement (particualrly deeper base and better soundstage) when a large external power supply is used. To have an effect the power supply has to be substantailly (5-10 times) larger than the 30W internal power supply. Here are some option which have been used by ur customers. Mytek has not yet conducted testing of either of these.

Nordost Heimdall 2 signalkabel – 1 meter XLR

Dermed ”flyter” lederne nesten fritt inne i kabelen.
