Audio GD NFB6 Headphone Amplifier

Audio Gd has been a favorite manufacturer for headphone fans having developed a reputation of building amplifiers and other products to very high standard at a reasonable price and the NFB6 follows in the same tradition. The NFB6 is built to a price point but it appears to have been designed in the same tradition as all Audio GD products.

It has 5 inputs and is fully balanced. It can be used either with a DAC or CD player in either balanced or single ended mode. It can also be used as a standalone preamp. The retail price is $400.00 without the remote control and for $50.00 extra you can have get a remote control. The case is the traditional black heavy duty case Audio GD uses in most of their products. It also has an 80 step volume control which Audio Gd describes on their web page in detail. For the price it would be difficult to find products built like the NFB6 with all the features described.  Audio GD is packed with features unheard of in this price range.

The NFB6 has two gain modes designed into the unit. The low setting is set at 0 db  and high has gain of  9db and my auditioning was done primarily using the low setting as I found the high setting very hard and aggressive and edgy to a point where I always wanted to stop listening. Single ended mode which most users in this price range would be using the amplifier is hard and grainy most of the time with a single ended source and is better in all ways and a significant step up in balanced mode. Single ended most $250.00 amplifiers and many even less priced would be a better option.  The full description of all the power ratings are listed on the website and power for any headphone will not be an issue. The unit is fully discrete design with no opamps and all quality parts. I had to keep reminding myself to review this amp I also had to consider its price point and that all my other headphone amplifiers are two or three times more expensive than the NFB6

The NFB6 sounds better in balanced mode. It drives the HD800 and the HE500 very easily. It is clean and neutral. It had pretty much all balanced flavor to the bass and midrange. The treble at first was brittle but it did get better used balanced and with some hours on the unit.  Most of my time using the NFB6 has been with the HD800 using a Norse balanced cable provided by Trevor for this review. The cable is outstanding and really provided a clear window into the music and allowed me to evaluate this amplifier and hear both the amplifiers strength and also to hear what the amplifier did not do as well.   I have also struggled to write this review as my time with the NFB6 has been a mixed bag of ups and downs.  I think most users using this amplifier would be using the orthodynamic headphones offered by HiFiman and for those headphones this would be a nice low cost alternative


 The NFB6 in balanced mode is clean. It is also very neutral.  Soundstage is excellent. It is both deep and wide. There is no noise as the amplifier is very quiet. Bass is not tipped. It goes deep but does not hit hard. Treble is as it should be balanced and is brittle single ended. The amplifier is not as dynamic as others I have heard in this price range and some priced less.  High gain makes it hard and aggressive low gain requires the amplifier to be listened to at higher volume settings but it also the best way I found to use the NFB6. Single ended was and is too hard and edgy. Most of all it is very fatiguing and balanced is really where this amplifier is best suited to play music. The NFB6 does not favor any genre all are played equally. Vocals are clean and not sibilant. Instrument tone is good.


As most can see this has been a very difficult review for me to do.  The NFB6 has been a very mixed bag over the last four weeks. It is a $400.00 amplifier built well and loaded with features. It also need to be used balanced which for many will make this a harder choice as headphone and sources can get expensive. In single ended mode this amplifier is outclassed by lower priced amps. In this price range there are not too many balanced amplifiers. I would only recommend this amplifier for balanced use and in that context it is a three star performer. It is good solid well built amplifier by a manufacturer known for building battleship products. I can see this being used by people as a stop gap owning expensive headphones that want to experience balanced but cannot yet afford a reference amplifier.  It does not excite as the much more expensive amps I have.   It is also not the last word in detail or extension.  I also recommend this for the users of the HE500 as it has gobs of power and it can be used to power the orthodynamic headphoneseasily. To sum it all up it’s a very clean and quiet headphone amplifier that will please many and can be a good stepping stone for people who want to build a balanced system and to be used as a stepping stone for the HD800 until you  funds for the more expensive audio gd balanced amps or other amplifiers on the market. A good value based on price and recommended only for balanced use.



Tellurium Q Black was their first cable and they knew they were on to something special when they took the prototypes to various dealers for their comments and input. One in particular would not believe that it could match the somewhat thicker more expensive cable in their demonstration system.

Tellurium Q sat down and listened to some of the dealers familiar music tracks, then they swapped the cable for Tellurium Q Black. The dealer sat forward, looked at TQ and quite seriously asked what else they had done to the system while they were changing the cables over. It was only when the dealer swapped the cables himself a couple of times he believed the evidence of his ears.

So why Black II? Despite Black winning multiple awards, surprising owners with it’s performance and more people than ever choosing to use it in their systems?

Tellurium Q have been learning and developing, especially in the last few years and have come up with a way to make this little gem even better. The only thing to do was to give it to their customers. Switch Black for Black II and it is completely obvious which is which. Once you hear the difference, it is also completely obvious why they felt compelled to upgrade Black in the way that they have.

HIFI World: Back in black

Tellurium Q has updated its award-winning Black cable – and made it even better, says Jon Myles

Tellurium Q may be a relatively young company but it has forged an impressive reputation for constructing high-quality audio cables during its eight years of operation. One main area of its focus has been engineering as clean and phase neutral a path for electronic signals passing through loudspeaker cables and interconnects as possible. If implemented correctly, this should give a more transparent, focussed sound with less smear and the reduction in perceived timing of musical pieces it brings.

While the original Black cable was good this new version takes all its qualities and builds on them with a sense that it is letting even more of the musical information through. Timing, especially, seemed better and more focussed with a total absence of smear or haze around instruments. With a slice of classic electronica such as Kraftwerk’s ‘The Model’ the flip-flopping bass line had a rock-solid beat to it but wasn’t overly dominant, allowing the intersecting synth lines above to shine through.

An update to an already outstanding loudspeaker cable, the new Black II cables improve on the originals to a remarkable degree. Highly recommended.

Cinnamon-B_300x300_mainIn 1982 Sony gave us “Perfect sound forever,” along with the attitude that, “it’s just digital, so all CD players sound the same.” That was disproved and qualitative differences between players became accepted truth. Next came separate transport and DAC combos, which brought with it the attitude that “all S/PDIF digital audio cables sound the same…” until that too became disproved. Now the frontier has moved once again. Is digital audio really just ones and zeros? We don’t believe so, and once you’ve had a chance to listen to Cinnamon USB, you won’t think so either…

SOLID 1.25% SILVER CONDUCTORS: Solid conductors eliminate strand-interaction distortion and reduce jitter. Solid silver-plated conductors are excellent for very high-frequency applications, like USB audio. These signals, being such a high frequency, travel almost exclusively on the surface of the conductor. As the surface is made of high-purity silver, the performance is very close to that of a solid silver cable, but priced much closer to solid copper cable. This is an incredibly cost effective way of manufacturing very high-quality USB cables.

FOAMED-POLYETHYLENE INSULATION: Any solid material adjacent to a conductor is actually part of an imperfect circuit. Wire insulation and circuit board materials all absorb energy (loss). Some of this energy is stored and then released as distortion. Cinnamon USB uses air-filled Foamed-Polyethylene Insulation because air absorbs next to no energy and Polyethylene is low-loss and has a benign distortion profile. Thanks to all the air in Foamed-PE, it causes much less of the out-of-focus effect common to other materials.

TERMINATIONS: Precision gold-plated plugs are carefully attached with the very best solder. Through choice of flux and metallurgy, AQ solder has been optimized to make a low-distortion connection. The difference you hear between solders is a result of connection quality. AQ solder does not have a high silver content because the more silver there is in solder, the more difficult it is to make a good connection.

Cayin CD-252

Du har sikkert allerede guflet dig igennem testen af den forrygende integrerede forstærker Cayin 252B, som kan findes i testsektionen. Sammen med den dejlige forstærker, der som det første og eneste produkt har fået HIFI4ALL.DK’s EDITORS CHOICE, fulgte Cayin’s nye skud på CD-spiller stammen, CD-252.

Alene sammenfaldet af modelnummeret 252 er nok til at de to spillemaskiner må antages at være i nær familie med hinanden. Der er da heller ingen grund til at antage andet, når de begge pakkes ud og står ved siden af hinanden.CD-252 er samme sorte farve og afbryderknappen er også den samme, men så går familiebåndet heller ikke meget længere. Hvor forstærkeren har to gennemtrængende blå lysdioder på fronten, præsenterer CD-252 sig med et display i en ubestemmelig, men letlæselig grøn farve, der på ingen måde signalerer slægtskabet mellem de to brødre. På fronten finder du desuden fire mindre knapper til den basale betjening (Open, Play, Næste og Forrige, som efter min mening burde have været placeret i en samlet gruppe. Men pyt, det tager kun få sekunder at få det på rygmarven. CD-skuffen er fantastisk lækkert arbejdende og giver virkelig et indtryk af kvalitet. Drevet er CDM 12.10 fra Philips med Philips CD7 servoen, som også findes i f.eks. Shanling rørbestykkede CD-spiller og Music Hall. Bagsiden er ganske almindelig med et sæt forgyldte RCA-udgange til de analoge liniesignaler og både en optisk og coaxial, digital udgang. I alt en diskret og nydelig sag der sammen med sine 10 kilo signalerer uproblematisk drift i mange år.

I forhold til forgængeren, CD-251, er CD-252 forbedret på flere områder, idet strømforsyningen er forøget, 24 bit/ 96 kHz D/A-konverterne kommer nu i seneste generation fra Crystal Labs, de analoge kredse er bedre separerede og med designændringer, værket har forladt sin centermonterede position og chassiset er kraftigere – dvs. forbedringer på stort alle væsentlige områder.
CD-252 ledsages nu også af en lille, fin remote i alu-chassis med små, smarte knapper. Desværre ændrer det ikke på det faktum, at du praktisk talt skal stå lige foran maskinen og ramme remote sensoren lige i øjet for at få en reaktion fra maskinen. Undertiden synes kommandoerne forsinkede op til et sekund eller to inden der sker noget.Musikken
Efter 50 timers tilspilning var det første ord, der faldt mig ind: Ro ! Jeg mener dog ro i sin bedste betydning, hvor roen er skabt af fornem kontrol over det samlede lydbillede og de dynamiske egenskaber. Der er absolut ingen slinger i valsen – instrumenterne bliver præcis hvor de er sat fra starten, lydbilledet antager en helt fast karakter og får ikke lov at give sig en centimeter undervejs. På disse punkter minder CD-252 en hel del om den dobbelt så dyre Primare D30.2. CD-252 leverer dog ikke samme bredde og dybde i lydbilledet som Primare, men det vil også være at forlange det komplet urimelige, da Primaren er ret god i sin egen prisklasse !Sammenlignet med Thules balancerede Spirit CD der er godt 1000 kroner billigere, fandt en enkelt på testholdet, at CD-252 faktisk var en anelse kedelig og også i denne sammenligning noget smallere i lydbilledet. Intens nærlytning afslørede dog, at Thulen tilførte lydbilledet en anelse glansbilledagtig lyd i toppen af frekvensområdet, som kan forveksles med et bredere lydbillede. CD-252 er bare knusende rolig med en knastør og superdetaljeret gengivelse. Gengivelsen af optagerummet er særdeles præcist – kender du din favorit koncertsal godt, kan du også genkende den på gode indspilninger afspillet over CD-252. Dynamisk er der ingen afsnit i frekvensområdet, der stikker af fra hinanden. Gengivelsen er altså særdeles homogen og sammen med en lav forvrængning, bidrager den i høj grad til roen i lyden og muligheden for at spille alle typer musik non stop i halve og hele dage uden lyttetræthed.

Cayin har med CD-252 skabt et særdeles kompetent stykke værktøj til afspilning af dine CD’ere til en ganske fair pris. Det er ikke verdens bredeste lydbillede, men den knusende ro og den nøjagtige reproduktion af optagerummet/ koncertsalen er ganske overbevisende. Er du på jagt efter en ny CD-spille i prisklassen eller gider du ikke lytte til CD’ere med din DVD-maskines middelmådighed, bør du gøre dig selv den tjeneste, at tage Cayin CD-252 med i overvejelserne, når valget skal tages. Så må tage det specielle display og den mindre effektive remote med som hundeprutterne i posen med de fine, håndlavede bolcher !

 Tidal er Wimps internasjonale versjon av Wimps egen HiFi-tjeneste. Visuelt skiller Tidal seg fra Wimp med et annet design, men det som er på innsiden av innhold, menyer og innstillinger er så vidt vi kan se mer eller mindre identisk.

Dette gjelder enten vi bruker Tidal på mobil, nettbrett, PC eller via webspilleren. Tidal er rett og slett Wimp med en litt annen påkledning.

Det gjør at om du er Wimp-bruker vil du umiddelbart kjenne deg igjen. Det som ennå mangler i den norske versjonen av Tidal er det «norske» redaksjonelt tilrettelagte innholdet.

Hva er HiFi-streaming?

HiFi-lyd er ikke definert i noen standarder, men brukes stort sett om lyd som CD-kvalitet (16-bit/44,1 kHz) eller bedre, ofte 24-bit 96/192 kHz.

Bit-tallet referer til musikkens oppløsning (dynamisk oppløsning), mens kHz er samplingsfrekvensen (sier litt om hastigheten til den digitale-til-analoge prosessen). Generelt så anses en høyere frekvens som bedre enn en lav frekvens.

Tidal tilbyr tre nivåer av streaming:

  • Standard: ACC+ 96 kbps
  • Høy: ACC 320 kbps
  • HiFi: FLAC 1411 kbps
 ACC (Advanced Audio Coding) er en standard som ble laget for tapsfri lyd og ble i sin tid designet for å etterfølge MP3-formatet. Generelt så kan man si at ACC skal levere bedre lydkvalitet enn MP3 ved samme bitrate.

FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) er et format som ikke forringer lydkvaliteten – og har av den grunn vokst fram som et populært format for lyd.

Tidal streamer HiFi med Flac 1411 kbps/16 bit (Flac- og Alac-filer). Ifølge Wimp er dette over fire ganger bitraten til konkurrerende tjenester. 320 kbps skal tilsvare kvaliteten på en CD. Wimp har eksakt de samme kvalitetsnivåene – gitt at du har Wimp HiFi.

Buchardt Audio S300

The S300 has gone through a major upgrade. Although the old S300 was an amazing speaker, there where still room for improvements. We wanted it to be among the best sounding 2 way speakers out there.

The Soundstage.
The soundstage is just outright amazing! It’s plays far beyond the speakers itself, and with a depth that makes you feel like you’re listening to live acoustic music.

Off axis characteristics.
This has always been a big focus point for Buchard Audio. The importance of the off axis sound, is overlooked by many. Whether we want it or not, the room we place the speakers into is going to influence the sound a lot! This means the speakers have to sound as equal as possible, no matter where they are positioned in the room. The drivers have a big impact on this, but the Crossover design influence this even more. The S300 MKII masters this ability and you will notice that the sound doesn’t change character, no matter where you are in the room.

Flat Impedance.
The new design has a very flat impedance, this makes the S300 MKII easier to drive for small amplifiers.

Time corrected drivers.
The engineers have been able to time correct the tweeter to the woofer without “tilting” the speakers backwards.

The Sound.
The S300 MKII is a very neutral sounding speaker, but not by any means boring to listen to. It has smooth and detailed highs, with a mid-range that really brings the voices forward. Although it’s only equipped with a single 6” bass driver, the amount of depth, tight and crystal clear bass it delivers, will surprise you! You don’t need a sub-woofer to support the S300 MKII at all!

Please note that the speaker requires a ”burn in period” for them to reach their optimal state. The sound will be a bit to the bright side at first. This will drastically chance after 30-50 hours of play time.

My first meeting with the Buchardt audio was on the HiFi fair called Sweetspot in Jönköping Sweden. Both the s200 and s300 took me by storm. To get a speaker for only 7.000-10.000kr to perform better than many speakers in the 100.000kr class is fantastic. The speaker i choosed was the s300 which i think has it all. It’s able to perform good on everything from jazz to hardrock. How the music disapears from the speakers is really amazing, and this is something i think a small amount of speakers can handle. It’s a speaker with extremely high resolution with a mindrange to die for and the bass is fantastic. But above all, it will still put the music in first position. S300 is absolutley one of the best spekars i’ve heard from a prizepool at least 100.000kr. Sincerely, Mikael Hallengren

Store små højttalere

Hvordan kommer man videre efter en overstrømmende succes med sit første produkt? Man prøver at gøre sig selv kunsten efter – og laver et nyt.

Det er gået stærkt for danske Buchardt Audio. Siden firmaet debuterede på Hi-Fi & Surround-messen i oktober 2014, er det strømmet ind med både lovord og bestillinger. Mads Buchardt, som er firmaets eneste medarbejder, har derfor haft travlt.

Vi testede i januar – som det første medie – S200, der var den første tilgængelige model fra Buchardt Audio. Og vi var mildt sagt imponerede over, hvor meget kvalitet det var lykkedes at proppe ind i de meget små og billige kasser. Især bassen fik os til at tabe underkæben.

Nu er de større S300 så blevet klar til levering. De blev også i sin tid demonstreret som prototype på messen, men da højttalerne produceres i Indonesien, og der skal bestilles temmelig mange ad gangen, var der ikke penge til at sende begge modeller på markedet på én gang.

Finish og placering
Buchardt S300 ligner ved første øjekast S200 til forveksling. En minimalistisk designet tovejskonstruktion i sort eller hvid silkemat finish. Kabinettet er dog nogle få cm større på hver led, og bassen er på 6 tommer, hvor S200 havde et 5 tommers bas-element. Frontstoffet dækker ikke hele fronten, men er udformet som runde stofhætter, der lige akkurat dækker henholdsvis bas og diskant, og holdes fast med usynlige magneter.

På bagsiden er der dog forskel. I stedet for et slavesystem er S300 basrefleksafstemt. Slaveafstemningen var nødvendig for at få den mindre model til at gå dybt nok i bassen, men i det større kabinet er der ifølge Mads Buchardt ikke samme gevinst ved slaveprincippet, så her er der valgt en traditionel basport. Højttalerne er opgivet til at have en nedre grænsefrekvens på 33 Hz (-3 dB).

Højttalerterminalerne er udført som solide bananbøsninger med plads til ret tykke kabler.

Buchardt S200 overraskede med en basgengivelse, som vi kun har oplevet tilsvarende fra meget få minihøjttalere (de er på under otte liter i kabinetvolumen). S300 gør det på ingen måde dårligere, men det er ikke helt så overraskende, da kabinetterne er næsten dobbelt så store. Der er naturlige grænser for, hvor meget luft et 6 tommers bas-element kan flytte i de nederste oktaver, men en subwoofer behøver ikke at være det næste, du anskaffer.

Anbragt på standere og med en halv meter til bagvæggen kvitterer S300 med et stort og velopløst lydbillede, hvor selv meget små detaljer kommer med.

Mange sværger til tovejshøjttalere, fordi der med kun to elementer og én delefrekvens er færre problematiske overgange at tage hensyn til. Til gengæld er udfordringen med at få blot to elementer til at dække hele det hørbare område så meget desto større.

Samarbejdet fungerer endda rigtig godt i S300. Overgangen mellem de to elementer er fuldkommen glat, og højttalerne skaber et særdeles flot stereoperspektiv, der rækker langt ud på begge sider af højttalerne – og faktisk et godt stykke hen ad sidevæggene.

I en godt dæmpet stue på 25 kvadratmeter kan man spille rigelig højt, uden at højttalerne mister deres greb om tingene. S300 er ikke diskotekshøjttalere, men de følger fint med, når der kommer et nummer, som kræver et ekstra vrid på volumenknappen. Selv min yndlings-stresstest, “Pestilence and Plague” fra Judas Priests Nostradamus, blev spillet på fuld tryk, uden at elguitarer og kor flød sammen. At S300 er afslørende, bevidnes også af, at flere af dem allerede bruges i lydstudier.


Comeback er en svær kunst, især efter et så perfekt afsæt som S200. Men S300 er en tredjedel større, en tredjedel dyrere – og også en tredjedel bedre. De vil ikke i samme grad chokere på grund af størrelsen, men som trofaste og meget præcise musikgengivere skal de nok få mange tilhængere. Og nu også til større stuer.
